Cherry dump cake and a handful of hope

Five things (at least), every day.

1. For coworkers who bring food to share. Today, cherry dump cake and cherry tomatoes and a bit of chocolate.

2. For the technology that allows us to watch movies and interview clips and even silly baby armadillo videos again.

3. That I found those books I was looking for so I can send them where they're going, and also found something that had been out of sight so long I forgot it even existed.

4. For the postal service that will deliver them both safely.

5. For the so very alive friend who is celebrating a birthday today.

Normally my rule of thumb for my list of the day's gladnesses is things that are somehow specific to that day. But every day there are things that I remain thankful for. Among them,
6. The insistence of the friend who told me seven years ago to start making this list. There were days I had to be creative to come up with five, but it helped. It helped, mainly, to reorient the way I was looking at the world.

7. The Psalms, which were the equivalent of a personal flotation device when I was drowning in that same period.

8. The one who made me get help, and who saw me through.

9. The therapist I found, who is worth her weight in gold and dark chocolate.

10. Three things she told me the day we met, which were the sentence equivalent of a smooth little stone you might carry in your pocket:
• The depression is an entity, not you.
• You will get better.
• Hold the hope in front of you.

She was right.

11. To be alive, and for the feeling of anticipation, because of all the things yet to come this year that I am looking forward to.

How was your day? What are you perpetually glad for?
