21. Embodiment

As the cup was being passed this morning, the congregation was singing a song I've known for years, and a phrase stood out: "Spirit we long to embrace."

[Pause to contemplate.]

What would it be to wrap your arms around spirit?

The core of that line is the longing, I think. But it is a curious longing, to meet something untouchable, and to meet it in, and with, our bodies.

Thus today's list of thanks, for aspects of embodiment:

The phenomenon of music causing a chill in the body, and not because I'm cold.

The beauty and dexterity of hands, their extremes of firm strength and barely perceptible tenderness, the touch of one against another, even in the smallest action of pew neighbors nesting their communion cups.

The skin's happiness inside the soft cling of a favorite shirt that it's cool enough to wear again.

The body as self-contained instrument, whether humming or whistling or singing, whether singing in the shower alone or in the car with a CD or in a room with hundreds of other humans.

The bearable pain that says, "Go easy. There's something wrong here."

Forms of communicating without speaking.

The body's need to be fueled a few times a day, which gives the hands good work to do in preparation, makes the simple pleasures of eating a daily experience, and provides a reason for people to meet at a table together.

Jesus coming to live in a body, among us and with us.

What about your body? What ability of yours or aspect of living in one are you glad for today?
