24. Six things before breakfast

Or before arriving at work, which is sometimes where I eat my breakfast. Goodness, this morning:

The programmable auto setting on the coffeemaker, and whoever first decided to flavor coffee with cinnamon, even if it began as a kitchen accident.

Encouraging words in the in-box, from one of the faraway friends who can somehow see the hair shirt and will tell me to take it off.

The refreshment of brushing teeth.

Turn signals, so we can be aware of and adjust for others' intent.

The crape myrtles and chinaberry tree and strip of grass allowed to live along an edge of the parking lot, offering landmark and oasis in the ragged seam where two deserts of asphalt meet. And their older cousins, the mature trees throughout downtown, providing oxygen, shade, quiet music in wind-rustle, and the slow news cycle of the seasons.

The morning security guard who vigorously hails me (and I assume everybody) from his post behind the welcome desk, like a ship captain looking so genuinely glad that, wherever we've been on land or sea overnight, we've made it back to board again and embark on another day.

What got you going this morning?

  1. I don't like coffee, but I want to like it! I haven't tried cinnamon. That's worth thinking about...
