68. Open heart, no surgery

Someone thanked me today for opening my heart. It was a raw heart I had shown, beating irregularly from a jolt of fear.

We can't and shouldn't do that with everyone. We can't and shouldn't do that all the time. But in relationships of some depth or length, that time will come. The most trustworthy (and the kind of person I want to be) are the ones who can regard a bloody, beating heart calmly, without wanting either to poke it or to bandage it.

Grateful, today, for:
Time listening to and talking with thoughtful young people.
The color and swirl and kinetic beauty of autumn leaves.
A bounteous pulled pork sandwich and a fried pie split three ways.
A voicemail reminder of something I needed to do today.
People I can open my heart to.

What are you grateful for today?
