2. Arithmetic together

Friends who say, "Come over for dinner and we'll figure it out."

Learning about the musical instrument called a diddley bow (learn something new every day!) and seeing a picture of one with a resonator made of an Altoids tin.

The occasional surprise observance of  "chocolate o'clock" at work by the chocolate hostess (and her preference for fair trade chocolate).

Newsroom collaboration under a deadline.

Doing arithmetic together on a cleared table like a middle-aged after-dinner homework club and — aha!— seeing the facts that flicked on the light bulb and made a choice clear.

Recalling and telling stories about family sayings, such as "Sometimes you have to look under things."

The skittish cat letting me pet him.

A Voxer message from a sweet voice I haven't heard in too long.

How was your day?
